THIRTY-FIVE

Alex Lazzell was in Nelson Block and the clerk said he could get a message to him. I shook my head and said it wasn’t important. Whether the clerk thought that was a bit strange, I don’t know, but he just nodded and put his head back down focusing on his papers.

I found shade outside Nelson Block and waited.

Officers came and went and two hours passed before Lazzell appeared. He looked relaxed and distracted as he chatted with a colleague.

I followed.

They walked north and I slunk behind a building when they stopped, still deep in conversation. Then they parted. The other officer continued north towards what was signposted as the Drill Shed. Lazzell turned left into Crescent Road. On the right of the curve were housing blocks.

He kept walking; I kept following.

About three-quarters of the way along, he followed the path to one of the blocks and I darted for cover again. I hugged the wall in case he glanced my way, but Lazzell never looked.

He went up to a door, inserted a key, turned it and then pushed.

I started running.

He was all the way in by the time I barrelled through the closing door. I hit him like a rugby player, my left collarbone blasting into his midriff. His feet came off the ground and I kept going, driving into the apartment until he thudded into the wall opposite.

His face was full of shock, his breath gone, his body a crumpled heap.

“Get up!” I snapped.

He gasped and coughed. “What the hell?”

“Get up, Lazzell!”

The naval lieutenant coughed and used the wall to ease himself up. A defensive hand came out.

“Don’t hit me.”

“Where is she?” I barked, my voice edged with menace.

He blinked. “What?”

“Surena Johnson. Where is she?”

“I don’t know. For Christ’s sake, man. I told you I don’t know.”

“I don’t believe you!”

“But—”

“I know she ran away with a man called Alex.” I pointed to him. “And that’s you. I also know that she caught a taxi to Limassol.” I’ll grant you that Crawley had told me it was Limassol harbour, but the taxi driver hadn’t seen her get on a boat.

He said, “Can I sit down?”

I motioned him to a chair.

When he said nothing, I prompted: “Come on, Lazzell. Where is she?”

He looked at me with moist eyes. Was he going to cry?

“I honestly don’t know. I stopped seeing her—and it was only twice. I told you, Johnson scared me off. He said he’d kill me if I carried on with her.”

I shook my head. He sounded convincing, but this could be an elaborate act.

He said, “Look around my house. You’ll soon see she’s not here.”

“Don’t move!” I said and quickly checked the three rooms. I didn’t expect to find a woman but I thought I might find evidence that one had been here. Clothes or make-up perhaps. I found nothing.

“Fine,” I said. “So you’ve got her somewhere else. You have another place. You’re holding her against her will or forced her to kill someone for you.”

He sighed and rubbed
